CloudCompare Software Validation

Post by CaseyM »

Hi there,

I'm using CloudCompare to attempt to validate 3D scanning as a new technique and was hoping someone could assist with where to find information on whether the algorithms and implementation of CloudCompare has been validated for use?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Casey

What do you mean by 'validated' exactly? Several users have validated the algorithms on some synthetic datasets for instance. And considering what they are supposed to produce (either the distance to the nearest neighbor, or the distance to a local model, etc.) I believe they are free of any bug for quite some time now (they are pretty old).

The latest and most evolved distance computation algorithm is M3C2 (https://www.cloudcompare.org/doc/wiki/i ... 2_(plugin)). Once again it has been used quite often by many research teams, etc. But once again, the parameters are pretty complex and you have to set them right and use the tool (a plugin here) correctly if you want to get pertinent results ;)

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your response.

The primary tools I'm using in CC are ICP alignment and the Cloud-to-Mesh distance measurement and in order to say that 3D scanning is a valid technique, I also need to be able to say that the technology I used (primarily CC in this specific instance) has also been validated.

As you said that several users have validated the algorithms on some synthetic datasets, would you happen to know if they also utilised that ICP and C2M tools and be able to point me in the right direction of where I might be able to find this?

Thanks again for all your help!

Wow, apart from looking for articles citing CC, I can't point you to particular ones (I don't have the complete list ;).
