How to work with Point Clouds and RCPs

Post by Medoboss »

Hello Everyone,

Am new to the whole point cloud workflow, I understand how the field work is operated, and have good knowledge of revit work.
My issue is as follows, I currently have an RCP file, the size of the source is nearly 23gbs, The RCP file however is smaller than that significantly, since it is an RCP file I assume.

I openned it with Revit and Recap however it seems too choppy to work with and I would like to minimize it using Cloud Compare then export it to RCP again.

Unfortunately am unable to import RCP files into Cloud Compare, so I am trying to export the RCP file into either E57 or PTS (which is better?) format in order to import it into Cloud Compare.

My question is, is my approach correct? is this a good idea or should I try something else? I have a 35*40 meters floor with some choppy work and noise such as personnel and wires and cables and a lot of necessary points, the interval of point is also overkill and would like to drop it. I tried cleaning it piece by piece in recap.. however it crashed a couple of times on my device even though it is kind of a strong device, GTX1060 and a 8th gen processor, 16gbs of fast rams and 6gb of Vram.

Am not sure what is the best approach - am on kind of a tight schedule like, a week or 10 days maximum to finish this whole floor and am solo, any tips would be greatly appreciated about any aspect of this job, I need to do it due to other reasons and its a very good chance to advance in this field.

Thanks in Advance,
M

I don't know about the best process (since I don't know Recap), but I would advise you to use E57 if you want to import and export the data in CC.

With a 23 GB file and 16gb of ram you will probably struggle with with any software you use as your going to be using your hard disk as a page file. It would be best if you can split it into say 4 chunks to start with and then clean each of those to a reasonable level and then recombine them if you enough memory to.
