Doubts on supposedly georeferenced point cloud

Post by Klawd65 »

Hello everyone,
hope this is not a too newbie question. I'm evaluating a point cloud from a provider.
This point cloud should be georeferenced WGS84, these are the XYZ values I get for the global box center, when I load the cloud in CC:

The question is, I expect these XYZ to be easily converted to the right LAT/LONG of the survey zone. Since I'm not able to get a valid conversion from these values, does it mean the point cloud is not correctly georeferenced? Am I misunderstanding something? Or am I not giving enough information in this post?

Thank you in advance

Hi,

here it looks like your cloud is indeed probably in the WGS84 World Geodetic System. But with metric units (i.e. a 'projected coordinate system', probably UTM).

If you were expecting LAT/LON coordinates, you would need a different projection (or even no projection at all).

And mind that CloudCompare can only properly manage and display clouds with a projective coordinate system ;)

Hi @Klawd65,
I use LASInfo in LASTools to read the header of a LAS or LAZ file.

Forgot to add that the header of most LAS and LAZ files contains not only Coordinate System information, but also metadata about returns, histogram of classifications, scale, etc.
