Difference between subsampling and duplicate point removal

Could someone please clarify between the two different techniques "Subsample (spacing)" in the EDIT menu and the "Remove Duplicate Points" tool in the TOOLS menu?

Indeed the "remove duplicate points" highly resembles the "subsampling" one. It's just that it is dedicated to the removal of... duplicate points (therefore it has a very small min distance parameter by default and it outputs the number of "duplicate" points in the console).
