Measure distances in meshes

Post by Heidrun »

Hi,

I'm very happy I found CloudCompare because it can display my mesh (obj) together with my constructed buildings (dxf)!

But now I need some help: I want to measure distances in the obj-mesh. I just can't figure out how to do it... I tried to use the pointpicking tool and the compass, too. There are no measurements possible. In a pointcloud (las) it works fine.
I know that the program's name is CLOUDcompare, not MESHcompare :-) But is there a way to get some measurements from the mesh, too?

Thanks! Heidrun

It should be possible with the latest 2.11 version. Have you tried it?

Otherwise, with previous versions you have to convert the Mesh to a Cloud (with 'Edit > Mesh > Sample points', using a lot of points ;). Because CloudCompare indeed ;)

Hi Daniel,

thanks for your reply!

It works fine with the new version! Shame on me, I downloaded the 2.10 version in June and did not know there was a new one.

Thank you, Heidrun

How to measure the distances between two meshes at certain points ?

Well, you would have to compute the distances between the 2 meshes first, then you can pick a point with SHIFT+left click to read the distance (make sure to use a recent version so as to be able to read the distance anywhere on the triangle).

And should we use version 2.13 beta or 2.12.4?

I bet global and local coordinates should be the same if you load an STL file?

And I would use 2.13.beta by default.

The 2 d label is = c2m signed distance= the linear distance at that point ? And how we transfer these points yo csv or xcl

When we take the global coordinate each point has xyz coordinates . But in CT it is one number . So we should compare the 2d label to the CT xray numbers ?
