How to calculate volume loss in 3d scanned object?

Post by victor »

Hello

I'm new to this 3d geometric software world, so forgive me in advance!

I've scanned one model, approximately 5cm³ in volume. Then I scanned it again, but the object has been abrade on purpose.

My question is: How do I superimpose this objects, and calculate the volume loss by the wear I purposely made?

Hum, big questions!

First, you need to register the two clouds together. Either via a common part that didn't change (with the ICP/refined registration algorithm) or via common points (with the 'Align' tool), or thanks to apriori knowledge (then you can maybe use Edit > Apply transformation).

See https://www.cloudcompare.org/doc/wiki/i ... gistration

Then, you can either compute distances (with C2C or better, with M3C2). And if you really need volume, then it will only work in CloudCompare if your clouds are '2.5D'. See this other forum post that may give some clarity of what it means: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7035

And here is the documentation of the 2.5D Volume Calculation tool: https://www.cloudcompare.org/doc/wiki/i ... .5D_Volume
